Rural Tourism: Levochevo

The village of Levochevo lies 6km to the north of Smolyan and 7km to the southeast of the Pamporovo ski resort. It is situated in the upper part of a valley of the same name.

It is believed that the village, similarly to other settlements in the Rhodopi Mountain, was established during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria. The village was founded in the 16th century by Bulgarians who were fleeing from forced conversion to the Muslim religion. There are two theories about the origin of the name of Levochevo. According to the first, the name comes from the old Bulgarian name for farm yard (“hlev”), while according to the second, the village took the name of its first settler, Levochev.

The village’s surroundings are rich in natural sights. From here, one can hike to the Rozhen peak, the Pamporovo ski resort, the villages of Pisantsa and Hasovitsa, as well as the town of Smolyan. The village avails of a private hotel as well as several houses that offer accommodation to tourists. The annual holiday of Levochevo is celebrated on Ilinden (20th of July).
