Mountain Tourism: Mihalkovo

The village of Mihalkovo is situated 21km to the northeast of the municipal centre of Devin and 76km away from the district town of Smolyan. It lies in the southwest part of Phodopi mountain, on the banks of the Vucha River. The population of the village is some 400 people. It is a typical mountainous village (at 580 metres above sea level), scattered at the foot of several hills. The village appeals to tourists with its unique nature, preserved cultural and historical heritage as well as the typical hospitality of Rhodopi mountain dwellers. The near-by Vucha dam (next to the northern end of the village) draws on fishermen with its crystal clean waters, while the abundance of mineral waters in the region gives opportunities for spa tourism. Centuries’ old forests of pine-trees, spruces and beech-trees, plenty of herbs and preserved nature make Mihalkovo an attractive holiday destination.
The famous Mihalkovo mineral water springs just 900m to the east of the village. The spring’s water is naturally gassed and has the average temperature of some 28 degrees Celsius. The Mihalkovo mineral water is currently sold all across the country and exported, too. It is recommended for treatment of illnesses of the cardio-vascular, digestive, nervous and endocrine systems. Separately, the Persenk mountain hut, which is used by mountain hikers as a starting point for numerous routes in the Rhodopi mountain, is situated about 16km above the village.
