Settlements: Nova Zagora

The town of Nova Zagora lies 30km to the southwest of Sliven, on the main road from Sofia to Bourgas. Numerous men-made hillocks of different periods are the biggest archeological sight in area surrounding Nova Zagora. One of these is the Depsizskata Mogila (Depsiz’s Hillock) situated 3km to the southeast of Nova Zagora, close to the village of Ezero. Another hillock – the popular Karanovo Hillock - lies 9km to the west of Nova Zagora, nearby the village of Karanovo. It was formed by the consecutive construction of prehistorical settlements one over the other and is one of the biggest hillock settlements in Bulgaria. The thickness of its cultural layer is 12.4m, while the dimensions of its foundation are 250m to 150m. Here, archeologists have distinguished 7 different cultural layers, the oldest four of which were formed during the Neolithic era. The hillock is rich in well-preserved remains of ancient homes and household objects.
