Settlements: Simitli

The town of Simitli lies 17km away from Blagoevgrad on both banks of the Struma River. The lowest parts of the Rila mountain stand out to its east, while the Vlahina mountain can be seen to the west.
Simitli emerged during ancient times over an area of mineral water springs. The ancient settlement also lied on the crossroads between two important roads – one following the bed of the Struma River and leading to the Aegean Sea, and another one following the smaller river of Lebnitsa to the west. The mineral waters have a temperature between 33 and 36 degrees, and debit of 20 litres per second.
