The Tuzlata lagoon nearby Balchik lies 4km to the east of the town. The pool’s bottom is covered with black, plastic mud used for medical therapies. The presence of curative mud and a mineral water spring gave rise to a spa complex and many private villas on the banks of the lagoon.

The place around Tuzlata has been populated since ancient times. Remains of settlements dating back to the Hellenic period have been dug close to the pool. In the upper parts of the plateau above Tuzlata archeologists have found traces of a fortress from Roman and early Byzantine times.
