I have just returned from Golden Sands resort! Lovely. I suggest taking either pounds or euros and changing them in the hotel. Be careful of using the exchange kiosks we were told not to and didn't. The hotel is safe and offer similar rates, so be safe and don't get ripped off.
Enjoy Bulgaria we did.

shopping in bulgaria by tonia quance on 23 Jul 2006, 09:51
Of Course there are knockoffs on the open air market stalls!!!!!! Nobody would think otherwise. but the boutique shops in the major towns, the closest being Varna, sell quite genuine goods at very reasonable prices
But to be quite honest if you can't afford the real thing, why not buy a few fakes, it's hardly something to be embarrassed about. I bought a knock off ferrari coat for my 2 year old grandson, for how long he will be able to wear it, it is absolutely fine. But each to his or her own.

I have just got back from Golden Sands. The hotels (Kempinski, Admiral, Golden Beach etc.) are nice. Id just react to the first comment: "clothing is cheap", yeh of course it is, diesel t-shirts, prada sunglasses very cheap but they r all cheap rubbish, simply FAKE goods from Turkey. I would be very embarrased to come back to England with fake designer clothes etc. As I said hotels, beach are nice but anything else is cheap rubbish that is not worth buying. Food isnt amazing either, they cook lots of common English food (sausages, chips)and Bulgarian food is quite tasteless (prefer Sicilian cousine).
recent stay in the admiral hotel by tonia quance on 11 Jun 2006, 12:12
Just got back from staying for two weeks at the admiral.
Staff are really friendly and helpful, food is really geared for the germans who outnumber the brits in the hotel 9 to 1 and after a few days gets very monotunous, but there is plenty of it and it is well cooked.
there are so many resturants and cafes offering very reasonably priced food that it really doesn't pay to go half board. would give 100% to The Gibralter snackbar/resturant which is a few yards from the admiral 3 course meal with drinks for three £20 and the food is lovely.
clothing is so cheap over there that is pays to buy your holiday clothes when you get there(had to buy extra suitcase to get home). Retro pictures are really cheap and fantastic quality, best photographer is first one along perdestrian walkway at back of hotel. Tatoo's, sunglasses, leather anything, all one third the price of England. the price you see in what you pay, so no need to haggle, unless you are buying alot then they will knock something off, 200 b&h £11.00!!
Infact most things are 1/3 the price of the uk.
very safe friendly enviroment for kids
need to have your own towels for swimming pool, but buy them there they are cheap, room service is so cheap its unreal.
Tip the room cleaner when you arrive 10 lev(£3.75) and you get great service, there wages and long working hours are dreadful and they really appreciate and tips you give them.
best way to discribe golden sands is it's a bit blackpooly, make a great cheap family holiday, but can be rowdy,in a nice sort of way.
food & service sucks! by TOM on 28 Apr 2006, 13:15
Stayed there now twice and will look for another hotel in the future, the food quality really sucks, service is very inconsistent... Ok, the hotel is very reasonable in terms of price but what does it help if value for money is low.

I stayed at Astera last week. It was nice though... It was built some years ago. It's newer than the Admiral, even similiar, but not better, I suppose.
