Picturesque Hotel Gurko by Terry Mandeville on 12 Aug 2006, 21:40 My two teenage sons and I stayed 3 nights in this hotel. IT WAS WONDERFUL! The staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful to me and the boys during our whole stay. This is NOT your big cinder-block soviet-style hotel! It is beautiful, has character and history, and comfort.
We shared a triple room with 3 beds up the stairs on the second floor with a great view down into the river valley, up to the Monment to the Tsars Asen, and of all the picturesque houses clinging to the hillside. The price was very reasonable. The room was spacious, clean, decorated nicely, with its own WC and bathtub. Air conditioning and Cable TV too.
The restaurant is great! Folksy and colorful, with a variety of wonderful food. The room included a sit down Breakfast of sausages, eggs, thin pancakes, meats, cheeses, breads and pastries, fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, coffee, cocoa, tea, juices. The lunch and dinner menu is in Bulgarian and English, and includes really delicious and healthy National dishes (Shopska and other kinds of Salads, Meatballs, Kabobs, meats, fish, chicken, soups, breads, soda, raika, wine, beer, etc.... much more than I can begin to remember )
The hotel is located on Gurko Street, the oldest hillside street in the city - away from the bustle of downtown. Beautiful cobblestone! Places to sit on the side of the street and lounge or sip coffee. People were pleasant and friendly. It is a few minutes to the main street and mini-markets, cafes, restaurants, parks, public tranportation. We went for many walks...down to the river, past prolific gardens of beans and tomatoes and flowers... up to the church at the top of the hill to see Tsaravets fortress and wall laid out below us...
The city is about in the center of the country, and it is reasonably priced to hire a car, driver, and interpreter to see other places: Abernassi, Etara, Gabrovo, and a leaping point for about anyplace in the country.
I really loved this place. I want to come back and retire here!!!
