Bulgaria's Mountain Pearl's Power Consumption RocketingSource: Sofia News Agency (www.novinite.com) Published Date: 09 Nov 2006
Bulgaria's mountain pearl of Bansko is facing the danger of seeing power cuts on a daily basis once the winter season peaks.
Checks are now starting in all hotels, bars and housing complexes to see where people are using more electricity than they requested.
The resort is facing power grid overload due to excessive consumption, bTV reported.
Bansko's booming development in the last couple of years has led to many new buildings and an increased flow of tourists. This has caused electricity consumption to also surge, but the problem is that many of the new subscribers don't point out the real amount of electricity they are planning on using. Their goal is to pay a lower tax in the beginning, but don't think of the damage this could bring to the whole system, experts point out.
The local electricity distributor is already building a new station, but they still need to figure out exactly how much electricity would be consumed this winter, so there are no shortages.
