Bulgarian dentists have begun offering all-inclusive packages in Western Europe for cost-conscious patients.
The trips include air travel, hotel stays and even sightseeing in addition to dental work, Deutsche Welle reported.
Alexander Klochkov, a dentist with BG Denta in Sofia, said his company is one of those attracting Western patients.
"The tourism depends on two things: the quality and the prices," he said. "I don't know how fast the prices will rise and still be OK for the patients from Western Europe, but I think many clinics will try to develop it."
Experts say Bulgaria with its combination of well-trained healthcare workers and low salaries is in a good position to become a medical tourism hub, Deutsche Welle reported. Both Sofia, the capital, and Varna, a beach resort on the Black Sea, are attracting patients.
Martin, an Irish resident who did not want his last name used, got dental work from Klochkov.
"I had a very extensive amount of work to be done, and I also had a limited amount of time," he said. "One of the selling points was that the dentists there were able to say, 'Look we'll take out all the stops' to achieve what they set out to achieve. They put a program in place which they proposed to do in six days, and succeeded in doing in six days."
