Getting There: Pamporovo

Published Date: 13 Jan 2005

Pamporovo is one of the most beautiful mountain resorts in Bulgaria built to accommodate guests from all over the world. It is situated in the heart of the Rhodopi mountains, the mountain of the mythical singer Orpheus, on 1650 m above the sea level at the foot of peak Snejanka (1926 m). It is 260 km far from Sofia and 85 km from Plovdiv. It is the most southern skiing resort in Europe. If you cannot ski you will learn and if you are not a beginner you will have an unforgettable skiing experience! It is a favourite place for skiers during the winter being the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. The significant influence of The Aegean Sea appears here and the skiing season starts from mid - December to mid - April. Unfortunately, there are still no skiing conditions this year. The ski runs in Pamporovo come in all hardship levels. The major ski runs actually start from the top of the peak. The ski school is known for its experienced instructors. You can get accommodation in the hotels in the resort. The nearby Progled, Stoikite and Shiroka Luka villages also offer accommodation, which is considerably cheaper than that in Pamporovo.

If Pamporovo is your choice for a summer vacation you will be able to walk about the legendary mountain. Mountain guides are available for your hiking needs. If you like mountain biking there are several tours available. You shouldn't miss a trip to the Yagodinskata cave - the longest cave in Bulgaria - 8 km ( 5 miles) with a lit up section and wonderful formations. The Trigrad Gorge is also located nearby. Along steep cliffs a narrow road winds leading to the Dyavolksoto garlo cave, which has a huge waterfall underground. You should also visit the Bachkovo monastery -the second largest in Bulgaria after Rila Monastery.
